Introduced in 1961, the E-Type roadster proved to be an immediate success. Designed under the guidance of Sir William Lyons, the car was a longer and lower version of Jaguar's D-Type. Manufactured between 1961 and 1975, its combination of good looks, high performance, and competitive pricing established the marquee as an icon of 1960s motoring. On its release Enzo Ferrari called it "The most beautiful car ever made".

Early Production Series I (Built September 14, 1961) - Flat-floor, Welded Louver Model

875534 was completed on September 14, 1961, in Black over Beige upholstery with Black top, and dispatched to the U.S. on the 2nd of October through Jaguar Cars, New York, to its first owner Allen V.C. Davis of La Canada, California. Allen V.C. Davis, a successful entrepreneur, purchased this Jaguar in early 1962 at Satori Inc. of Glendale, his good friend who also admired the new model also purchased a 1962 E-type. Soon after Allen's friend wrecked his XKE, and fearful the same would happen to him Mrs. Davis insisted Allen sell his car. Bruce Carpenter managed a business for Mr. Davis, and in the mid-late 1960's Davis gave Bruce a choice of a cash bonus or the Jaguar. Bruce chose the Jaguar, which would remain under his care until 2018. Bruce was a former Marine and accomplished pilot - which accounts for the associated military and aeronautical decals were affixed throughout the vehicle. The car was named The Black Mariah after the song “They Call the Wind Mariah” - Bruce also credits the Jaguar for impressing a certain first date, which later became his wife. The car resided in garage care in the Hollywood Hills, CA with regular short drives through Griffith Park on Saturday mornings to keep the E-Type in shape. After retirement and moving to Nevada in 2011, Bruce would continue this tradition of Saturday morning drives to Cars & Coffee to meet with friends. A more detailed account of its history and can be found in the vehicle's dossier, along with the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate and ALL matching original owner's manuals, cards, and pamphlets in vinyl sleeve.

This early production Series I is among the early E-Types produced with flat floor pans and welded hood louvers, which are considered one of the most desirable and purest E-Types designs. Never restored, by its long-term caretaker, but rather regularly maintained, freshened and upgraded as needed. The arid southwest environment and garage storage has helped attribute to this typical “California Car's excellent preservation. While the exterior received a repaint many years ago, the body displays very straight panels, factory spot welds along the rockers, up the rear and across the inner structure – all paired to unpatched original floor pans and original paint visible in both the engine bay and luggage compartments. It appears all original Triplex glass, trim pieces, and several original exterior bits remain in place. The 84,125 recorded miles are believed to be original.

In early 2019 the Roadster was entrusted to Jaguar Specialist Jeff's Resurrections of Taylor, Texas for light cosmetic freshening, mechanical + electrical sorting and shake down. This included new, period correct Avon 6.40x15” tires (all 5), and correct engine compartment pieces, and safety equipment. Nearly $15,000 invested. The car would also receive an entirely new exhaust system and associated hardware from the porcelain coated headers to stainless steel piping. The bonnet was removed, dents repaired and re-painted by Jeff's Resurrections. Additional mechanical work included new brake and clutch hydraulic components.

While 875534 displayed suitable patina throughout, the decision was made to refresh the cabin's upholstery to better suit the car's exceptional drivability and driver comfort. This included all new door and trunk seals, paired to a fresh canvas top with correct tan headliner and matching boot cover for open-air presentation. The seats and surrounds received all new leather, vinyl trim, correct Hardura, underfelt and Wilton Wool carpeting - as well as aluminum console and chrome console components. Coco matts protect the wool mats below. The Blaupunkt Frankfurt “Z” radio has been fully rebuilt with Bluetooth capabilities and new speakers. The dashboard, dash face, gauges, switches, rearview mirror, etc. were kept original and in working condition. The Jaguar retains its correct positive ground electrical system. The current mahogany Moto-Lita 15” steering wheel offers better ease of access, while the preserved original 16” riveted wheel accompanies.

The complete matching-numbers powerplant (engine head and block), starts up, revs, and performs with ease in a variety of road conditions, with consistent compression of 145-150 PSI throughout all the cylinders. An upgraded aluminum radiator and electric fans provide sufficient cooling in idle traffic.

All factory identification tags and plaques remain riveted to the car, with a clean and clear front chassis stamping punched through the original paint. In addition to the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate and ALL matching original owner's manuals, cards, and pamphlets in vinyl sleeve, the car is complete original tool kit, jack in bag, Eureka copper hammer, wheel spanner and spare wheel assembly.
