In 1970, Maserati returned to the mid-engine concept it had considered earlier in the 1960s and in March of 1971, the all-new Bora debuted at Geneva. It featured a sporty but comfortable cabin with air conditioning and an innovative chassis. The Citroen-based, high-pressure hydraulics controlled the windows, pop-up headlights, adjustable seats and pedal box, as well as the ventilated disc brakes. With its 320-hp, 4,930-cc mid-engine V-8 and five-speed manual transmission, the Bora was capable of 0- to 60-mph times in 6.6 seconds, and a top speed exceeding 160-mph.

According to the Maserati S.p.A. Classiche Depart of Modena, this Maserati Bora 4.9 was completed to U.S. specifications in "Giallo" (yellow) paint over "Black" Connoly Leather interior with standard accessories. The Mantaggio E Finitura Venturra (End of Line Data Sheet) confirms the car was shipped to New York on June 6, 1975, while the Avviso Di Spedizione (Delivery Note) shows invoice 334/A of July 5, 1975 having chassis 930 arriving at Spett. Le Maserati Automobiles Inc., of Los Angeles, California.

This numbers-matching example is believed to have resided in California for the majority of its life, with records verifying two significant mechanical services in 2014 and 2015 by Dino Motors in San Mateo, CA, as well as a 2016 service to its hydraulic pumping system. It was the recipient of a tastefully well executed color change many years ago and presents as a sorted quality driver with regular road use. The polished stainless steel top shows well, with many original rubbers throughout the body and original wheels and Campagnolo decals. Its cabin appears very tidy with original upholstery, aside from the chairs that were recovered at the time of repaint. Mechanically, the engine runs strong and pulls well with no major issues noted. Behind the engine is the original spare in its correct boot, while the preserved front luggage compartment houses an original jack and emergency accessories. The underside of the car shows in consistency with a mechanically maintained, unrestored California car.

This 4.9 Liter is an absolute thrill to drive; the Maserati Bora combines the dynamics of a mid-mounted engine with an understated Italian design that delivers the ultimate highway motoring experience. Here is an attractive example verified by Maserati Classiche, representing a tremendous opportunity for any collector. Now available for worldwide inspection, purchase and delivery.
