Handsome Pininfarina Design - Renowned Ferrari Grand Touring Performer
Combining avant-garde Pininfarina styling with outstanding V-12 performance, Ferrari's 330 GT 2+2 debuted in 1963. While following in the footsteps of the prior 250 GTE 2+2, the 330 GT 2+2 upped the ante on performance and set new standards for comfortable, high-speed motoring pleasure for up to four occupants. While clearly an elegant and sophisticated Ferrari road car, the taut Pininfarina-styled 330 GT 2+2 maintained a sporty air to match its rich Ferrari heritage. Its Tipo 209 Colombo-derived V-12 engine, enlarged to 4.0 liters, provided heady top-speed potential of more than 150 mph, making it the fastest road-ready Ferrari of the day and certainly its fastest 2+2 model. Said to be one of Enzo Ferrari's favorite models of the era, just over a thousand 330 GT 2+2s were built along two distinct series between 1964 and 1967.
Numbered 8871, this highly desirable 'Series II' 1966 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Coupe is particularly rare as one of just 455 “two headlamp, 5-speed” examples. Listed in the reference book “Ferrari Serial Numbers: Part I” by Hilary A. Raab and accompanied by history documented by Ferrari marque historian Marcel Massini, 08871 is an original left-hand drive, U.S. version, factory-equipped with desirable amenities including power steering and power windows. It was completed during July 1966 painted Bianco (White) with Nero (Black) leather and then delivered new to official East Coast Ferrari importer, Luigi Chinetti Motors in New York City.
The first recorded owner of 08871 was Stephen B. Potter and then in 1976, it was sold by him to a new caretaker residing in Florida, who had an air conditioning system and Motorola alternator installed. In April 1976, 08871 was advertised at 32,500 miles and the next month, acquired by Herschel Abrams of Hallandale, Florida, who in turn traded the Ferrari to Jerry Keifer of Cincinnati, Ohio, who had the car painted Red. At 49,000 miles in July 1981, William C. Cekal of Aurora, Colorado would be the next caretaker in line for 08871. Mr. Cekal would add 14,000 miles during his ownership, eventually selling the Ferrari in June 1984 to Alan G. Tyler of College Park, Maryland, who would transfer to its long-term keeper, Michael J. Belo, an attorney from Denver, Colorado. In 2008, Mr. Belo had the engine rebuilt at 82,250 recorded miles and then he participated in local car shows with 08871. In January 2010, Mr. Belo with the engine work completed, the engine compartment touched up, a new period correct Becker radio sourced from Germany and installed, and new Pirelli tires fitted for continued enjoyment of “his baby” until mid-2012, after 28 years of ownership. It's most recent owner joined the Ferrari's roster of keepers in September 2012 and applied a careful and consistent program of maintenance, with about $35,000 in receipts on file for the work, including rebuilt front seats with new leather covering, and attention to the clutch, charging, braking, air conditioning, and underpinnings, plus installation of a new clock and speedometer, plus detailing of the engine compartment. A large document binder accompanies 08871, including model information, photos, and technical information for the electrical system and interior controls, maintenance receipts and correspondence.
Paired well to its excellent mechanical prowess, the 330 displays beautifully settled cosmetics, ideal for vigorous driving or vintage distance touring. Aside from the expertly reupholstered captains seats, the vehicle's cabin displays charming original upholstery, including the carpeting and woodwork. The nearly 40 year old lacquer paint, although glossy, is showing crazing throughout the finish and remains perfectly suitable for use and enjoyment as is, or would make an excellent base for reinstatement back to Bianco as delivered. Both front and rear compartments are very tidy with an outstanding engine bay displaying beautifully correct fit and finishes, while the undercarriage appears structurally solid. 08871 provides an exciting opportunity to acquire a properly maintained and documented example of one of Ferrari's best V-12 GT cars of the 1960s – now available at a great price for worldwide purchase and delivery from our Houston, Texas showroom.
