As World War II ended, Daimler-Benz AG was in precarious health. In 1951, an upscale modernization of the 170 bowed as the 220 series, with the internal company designation of W187. Styling was similar to the 170, but its headlamps were faired into the front fenders instead of free-standing, giving the car a more up-to-date appearance. The engine, however, was completely new. It was novel not only in its architecture but also for its dimensions. The “short-stroke” was unusual in Europe at the time, but became the mainstay of Mercedes-Benz's line, and derivatives remained in production until the 1970s. More than 16,000 Mercedes-Benz 220s were sedans, but more discerning buyers also had the option of ordering a two-three seat Cabriolet A or a full four-seat Cabriolet B. Just 1,278 people opted for the “A” version.

187 012-45-00427 was dispatched on August 21, 1954, wearing nitrocellulose Black paintwork and Black fabric top, over “Special Upholstery” Light Green Epinglé fabric with Reseda Green leather piping and Becker Mexico radio with antenna. The Cabriolet A was ordered new by Gunther Timmerman, as recorded on the Mercedes-Benz DataCard and scribed in the vehicle's Kraftfahrzeugbrief (Registration / Log Book), Nr. 6454422. Hans Eilken BMW was next to care for the 220, before Mr. Piekel of Oldenburg. Georg Schwarting took possession in September 1958. 18 years later, Georg Schwarting (Daimler-Benz) sold the car to Mr. and Mrs. Bennett of Massachusetts in September of 1976. Immediately following, the car shipped from Bremen to Boston, where it would reside in nearby Winchester under single ownership for the following 42 years. In addition to the original Kraftfahrzeugbrief, the 220 benefits from an excellent recorded history and is accompanied by ALL original purchase, shipping and customs paperwork from 1976, along with correspondence letters between Georg Schwarting and Mr. Bennett.

After 30+ years of enjoyment, the Cabriolet A was due for cosmetic freshening, so in early 2008 the Mercedes-Benz was sent to Illinois, where it was subjected to a yearlong cosmetic restoration, including metalwork, paint, chrome, trim, rubbers and upholstery - a $42,000 investment. 10 years past, the car still shows beautifully and can proudly shown. A recent mechanical inspection and tune-up, along with correct as delivered 6.40x15 tires was just performed. It comes complete with early records, restoration invoices, original German Operating Manual, reproduction English manual and parts catalogs – in addition to an emergency triangle, jack, tire iron, luggage straps and original/unrestored spare tire assembly. A particularly rare find - especially on this side of the pond, this incredibly elegant 1954 Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet A from many years of documented ownership is now available from our Houston, Texas showroom for worldwide purchase and delivery.
