A Phenomenal Example of the Increasingly Desirable Mercedes-Benz Pagoda

1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL “Pagoda”

Chassis No. 113 044 12 023051

• 1-Owner California Car from New
• Lifelong California “Blue Plate” 280SL
• Desirable Final Year Production Example
• All Date Coded Wheels, Body Numbers, Notches, Decals & Spot Welds
• Original Tool Roll, Every Book, Manual & Accessory
• A Phenomenal Example of the Increasingly Desirable Mercedes-Benz Pagoda

The Mercedes-Benz 230-280 SL series continued the tradition of the sporty open convertible of this famous German manufacturer. It was the successor to both the 190SL and the legendary 300SL Gullwing. Today, its popularity as an everyday useable classic is increasing. It is nimble and practical, while the styling is delicate and well-balanced. All this translates to rising demand on the collector market for these cars, especially for the 280SL model.

Presented here, wearing correct Beige over Cognac MB-Tex livery, this particular 280SL is a final production year, California market Pagoda like none other we ever come across. This lifelong “blue plate” car was recently acquired from its single owner from new and former senior California public official – now sold for the first time on its California Pink Slip.

Today the Mercedes presents as a well maintained and regularly driven 44yr old car should, but rarely do. Carefully preserved over time, with an exterior paint refresh many years ago, both Tobacco Brown hard and fabric tops compliment, while retaining all original trim, brightwork, glass and body components. The cabin's Cognac upholstery is very nicely displayed and remains largely original, including carpeting under a custom 7-piece calico coco mat set. Original Frigiking air-conditioning, Becker Europa radio and plastic dash vent controls also remain in excellent order. Top wrenches and case reside in the glove box. The luggage compartment shows just as well and completely untouched with flawless floors, original satin paint, mats, spare/tire, cover, jack assembly, wheel chalk, complete tool roll, matching luggage and strap. All 5 wheels are original 11/70 date coded, along with body number stampings on the bonnet, hardtop, deck lid, transmission support with front fender spot welds and notches. Correct decals are displayed throughout the engine bay, body and rare California emissions on the hardtop quarter window.

The SL's engine starts easily and performs well, with a recent general tune-up and consistent maintenance, confirmed by the heavily stamped Service Booklet from new. A Mercedes-Benz DataCard translation below verifies the car's factory configuratio. Remarkably, the car is complete with every manual, book and pamphlet that originally accompanied it in protective sleeve, this includes: Owner's Manual, Service Booklet, Service Stations book, Dealer Directory, M-B Products for the Maintenance of Cars, Frigiking Operator's Guide, Parts Catalog, Bosch booklet, Hirschmann manual with key still attached, AAA Service Directory, period maps and complete Becker Autoradio owner's package.

Open air or comfortable coupe-esque touring, Mercedes-Benz's SL roadster have long been known to provide years of reliable motoring, and this late and fully equipped SL is just the candidate for continued enjoyment and exceptional preservation. This is truly a top of the line 280 SL Pagoda!
